This is probably the first time you'll read an article about a pavement maintenance contractor who projects to reach $1 billion in sales in 10 years. That's right, billion. Rabine Group, an umbrella organization for nine companies - six directly related to paving and pavement maintenance - has set $1 billion as its 2021 target, and based on recent growth and plans already underway, CEO Gary Rabine says it's a very reachable goal.

Curiosities: How does the DOT test new paving?
University Communications madison.com | Posted: Sunday, May 29, 2011 3:15 pm
Q: I hear University Avenue may need repaving. Don't they test asphalt before they pave?
A: The problem may have been detected shortly after paving, says Hussain Bahia, a paving expert and professor of civil and environmental engineering at UW-Madison.
Bahia notes that the state Department of Transportation requires extensive testing of asphalt when paving state highways, and the city of Madison follows the same standards.
"These things are done in a very engineered way, and the DOT has very good, very clear specifications, but things do happen," says Bahia.

Thanks to the efforts of three contractors, some souls can finally rest in peace. After a more-than-10-year fight to remove asphalt paving from an African burial ground in Richmond, Virginia, activists can now claim victory.
The owner of the land, Virginia Commonwealth University, had been using the land as a parking lot. Later this year, the land will change ownership from VCU to the city.

The Rabine Group recently hosted an educational seminar attended by Property Managers at NAI Hiffman. The event took place last April 19, 2011 in Schaumburg, Illinois. Rabine Paving’s Ryan Laughlin and UltraLot Paving Systems’ Scott Haislip, two of the company’s most experienced engineers, presented information on the benefits of asphalt and concrete paving. During the Q&A Session, one of the interesting questions raised was regarding how Property Managers should plan for a volatile market considering fluctuations in market pricing for fuel and asphalt products.
Ryan explained, “The price of asphalt paving products isn’t directly correlated to the price of gasoline but there is a strong relationship between the two. As the price of gasoline has steadily risen during the last 4 months, asphalt cement has followed in suit. Rabine Paving would advise that if you have currently available funds or expect to have funds available, secure proposals as soon as possible from your paving contractors. These...

Three New Models Deliver Superior Performance and Productivity
LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwire - March 22, 2011) - Case Construction Equipment today introduced three new DV Series double drum, large asphalt compactors that provide versatility for all types of production asphalt paving applications.
Case DV Series compactors deliver dual amplitudes, dual frequencies and centrifugal forces to meet the needs of any paving application, from coarse bases to hot-mix asphalt surfaces. “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” Does that ring a bell? It is a saying that is repeated over and over again in business and something many of us have learned the hard way by burning a bridge or having to put your “foot in your mouth” at one point or another. What we all have learned at this point is that you want to put your best foot forward at all times.

MANSFIELD -- Community leader and philanthropist Richard R. "Dick" Stander Sr., 92, died Feb. 4 at a Florida hospital.
He died after a short illness.
Stander was among the founders of The Ohio State University-Mansfield. He and his father, Carl, donated land for part of the campus, now shared with North Central State College. In recent years, he donated more than 30 wooded acres for academic purposes, including an ecology research site. The local OSU-Mansfield campus named Stander Plaza for him.
Stander earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The Ohio State University in 1940.
In 2005, Stander received the university's Distinguished Service Award at summer commencement.
John Riedl, a former dean and director of OSU-Mansfield, said Stander was a key supporter of the local campus.
"He was delighted to learn we were starting the first year of the engineering program here, and he had toured the laboratory," he said. "He was very, very pleased that was happening."

The Rabine Group Show
Parking Lot is Finished!
With over a dozen different pavement sections, the Schaumburg headquarters' unique parking lot is now complete. Not only does it look fantastic, but it will also be used as a showcase for the various pavement options the Rabine Group companies provide. Among the different parking lot pavement sections are conventional pavements such as asphalt overlays and full depth asphalt pavement as well as full depth concrete pavements and stamped concrete. Other pavements displayed, such as UltraLot Whitetopping, which is concrete pavement over asphalt, and pervious concrete pavement, which rain water drains through, are longer lasting, world class pavements that Rabine's pavement specific engineers are designing and building while continuously leading the industry. The Rabine Group will use their show parking lot to educate regional and national facility professionals as well as the Rabine group team.
When in the Schaumburg area, stop by 900 National Parkway and check it out! ...
